În Dominion fiecare jucător începe jocul cu un pachet identic format din 10 cărți (7 bani de cupru şi 3 puncte de victorie). În centrul mesei se află o selecție de cărți care pot fi cumpărate și adăugate la pachetul curent. Cu ajutorul cărților cumpărate în fiecare tură pachetul de joc se construiește din mers, astfel încât jucătorii sunt în competiție pentru a găsi calea cea mai bună către victorie.
Ce e cel mai interesant la acest joc e că toate cărțile se cumpără, inclusiv cărțile bani și cărțile care la final vor aduce punctele de victorie.
